12th Night

12th Night is a big deal in New Orleans as it marks the beginning of Carnival Season (Mardi Gras is a day, Carnival is an entire season).  On this night the Phorty Phunny Phellows have their wild Streetcar ride, throwing the first beads of the season and also the Joan of Arc parade rolls through the French Quarter.  I missed the streetcar this year but brought my kids to the Joan of Arc Parade (it is one of my favorite events of the year).  White horses, beautiful maidens, history, pageantry, a toast by Bienville and a stop at the cathedral for "Joan" to be ceremonially given her sword.  There is no city like this city.
